Kevin Stefanski hired by Falcons; Baker Mayfield responds
Cbssports reports the Atlanta Falcons agreed last week to terms with former Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski to replace Raheem Morris, which will pit him twice a year against his former quarterback Baker Mayfield, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Stefanski and Mayfield spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons together in Cleveland, and their time did not end well.
After Mayfield spotted a social-media post claiming he "failed the Browns" and was part of a "dumpster fire" quarterback room, he fired back: "Failed is quite the reach pal. Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage. Can't wait to see you twice a year, Coach." Mayfield led the Browns to an 11-5 record in 2020, producing their first playoff appearance since 2002 and the franchise's first playoff win since 1994, but he went 6-8 as the starter in 2021 while battling a shoulder injury.
Cleveland then pursued Deshaun Watson, sending Houston a package that included three first-round picks and giving Watson a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract, a move the report describes as "one of the worst trades in NFL history," with Watson listed at a 9-10 record as a Browns starter and not playing more than seven games in any of his four years there.
