The Mexican government has killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the longtime leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, after a security operation in Tapalpa. Authorities said he was injured during the mission and died while being transported to Mexico City for medical attention.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel split from the Sinaloa Cartel around 2009 and grew into one of Mexico’s dominant trafficking organizations. U.S. estimates put its membership at about 15,000 to 20,000; it moves synthetic drugs — including fentanyl, cocaine and methamphetamine — into the United States and other countries, and also profits from extortion, fuel theft, kidnapping, illegal logging and mining, and migrant smuggling.

The group has used public executions and social media to spread terror and was designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department. Mr. Oseguera’s death set off widespread violence across Mexico.
