Igor Tudor said he is more confident than ever that relegation-threatened Tottenham will remain in the Premier League, but their poor form in 2026 continued as Atletico Madrid thrashed Spurs 5-2 in the Champions League last-16. A confusing system handed the Spanish giants the initiative and allowed them to put the tie to bed in the first leg.

Tottenham found themselves 3-0 down after 14 minutes when goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky slipped while attempting a pass, handing the ball to Julian Alvarez, who worked it back for Marcos Llorente to score. Micky van de Ven then lost his footing off a simple pass from Pape Matar Sarr, allowing Antoine Griezmann to score, and Kinsky mishit another pass straight to Alvarez for a third.

Kinsky was substituted after those errors, receiving a standing ovation from the home crowd. Guglielmo Vicario came on but conceded soon after when a free-kick was flicked towards his own goal by Sarr and bundled in by Robin Le Normand.
