Kit Harington returns to HBO’s Industry after stepping away from Jon Snow
Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, appears in a new season of HBO’s Industry and told a reporter in his East London townhouse that he feels like “one of the luckiest people alive.” Harington plays Sir Henry Muck, a privileged, needy tech boss who the show’s writers describe as trying to be honorable in a dishonorable world.
Creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay said they gave Harington more to do in the latest season; last season Muck’s energy company collapsed and was bailed out by the British government, and in the second episode of the new season he is depicted as broken and depressed. The interview traces parallels and differences between Harington and Muck: both have aristocratic backgrounds, Harington said, but he grew up in Acton, attended a state school and later rose through theater to television, landing a lead at the National Theatre while in drama school and then Game of Thrones in 2009.
The piece recounts Harington’s struggle with addiction, his stay in rehab in Connecticut, the difficult reception after Game of Thrones’ final season, a year out, the pandemic pause, and subsequent stage work before taking the Industry role in 2023. Harington also described personal changes since rehab, including strategies to cope with anxiety and a renewed focus on family; he is married to Rose Leslie and they have two children.
