Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts George R.R. Martin’s 1998 novella The Hedge Knight nearly faithfully, with a few expansions and one major change. That left the finale with few loose ends: the novella was written as a self-contained story that could also set up further adventures.

HBO renewed the series in November, and season 2—expected in 2027—will adapt Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, The Sworn Sword. Showrunner Ira Parker said he loves the show and would make as many seasons as the network would let him. Warner Bros. Discovery said the first episode ranked among HBO Max’s top three series premieres of all time, and Parker notes the show’s per-episode budget is much lower than Game of Thrones, which could allow for a long run.

The complication is that Martin has only written three Dunk and Egg novellas—the third, The Mystery Knight, was published in 2010—so by about season 4 the series would face the same challenge Game of Thrones had of expanding beyond the written work.
