KPop Demon Hunters earns two Oscar nominations
Polygon reports KPop Demon Hunters, the animated film from Sony Animation and Netflix, has been nominated for two awards at the 98th Academy Awards.
The film received nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for "Golden." It has already won two Golden Globes and a Critics Choice Award. KPop Demon Hunters follows all-girl Korean band Huntr/x — Rumi, Zoey, and Mira — who by day are superstar idols and by night use their music to fight demons and try to restore the Honmoon; the story includes a demon counterattack that creates a boy band called Saja Boys. Since its June debut the franchise has dominated Netflix and Spotify: the singing voices Ejae (Rumi), Rei Ami (Zoey), and Audrey Nuna (Mira) performed a new cover of "Golden" on Jimmy Kimmel a couple of weeks ago, the film became the first all-women collective with a No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" in August 2001, and it surpassed Red Notice to become the most-watched Netflix Original.
Best Animated Feature nominees also include Disney's Zootopia 2 and Elio, and "Golden" was nominated alongside songs such as Sinners' "I Lied to You." The 98th Academy Awards will be televised on March 15 at 7 p.m. EDT/4 p.m. PDT; it remains to be seen whether Huntr/x will win.
