Kyle Walker has officially retired from the England national team, the Football Association confirmed. The 35-year-old Burnley defender closes a 15-year international chapter with 96 caps and appearances at five major tournaments, having previously played for Manchester City and Tottenham.

The Sheffield-born full-back made his senior debut in a 1-0 win against Spain in November 2011 and went on to feature at two World Cups and three European Championships. “I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I've achieved with England.

To represent my country at five major tournaments... has been a great honour. But today is the time that comes to an end. It's good for me to have a little bit of closure to my career on the international stage,” he said. Walker reflected on both highs and lows, saying “Iceland was a low,” and described the squad's aim under Gareth Southgate to change perceptions of English football.
