Christian Duguay is confirmed to direct Lady Liberty, a historical drama that will tell the origin story of the Statue of Liberty. The producers behind the French comedy The Intouchables (2011) and 2021's Oscar-winning CODA are attached to the project. The film will trace the artistic audacity of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the political vision of Édouard de Laboulaye, and the engineering ingenuity of Gustave Eiffel.

Set in the 19th century, it centers on Bartholdi and Laboulaye as they pursue a massive statue to honor the American fight for liberty and democracy, and on the unlikely friendship that grows amid detractors, financial obstacles, and technical challenges. No actors have been attached and no production or release timeframe has been announced.

Audiences should expect the story to span years, from the idea’s conception in the mid-1860s to the monument’s completion and dedication in New York City in 1886.
