‘Lanterns’ Trailer Just Confirmed DC’s Most Unexpected Green Lantern

The first trailer for Lanterns shifts the Green Lantern mythos from cosmic spectacle to a gritty murder mystery, following Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as investigators. If not for Jordan using his ring to fly and a glimpse of a Green Lantern costume, the series could be mistaken for a new season of True Detective.

Near the end of the trailer Jordan quips, "I'm the only human there," and adds, "One of them's a f***ing squirrel." That line points directly to Ch'p, the fan-favorite Green Lantern who looks like a squirrel and first appeared in Green Lantern #148 by Paul Kupperberg and Don Newton after being recruited to defend his homeworld, H'lven.

Ch'p has turned up across DC projects, including Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and a prominent appearance in DC League of Super-Pets, where Diego Luna voiced a version that gained electrical powers after an accident with Krypto.
