'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider' Surges on Streaming Ahead of Prime Video Reboot
The 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has climbed the streaming charts on Tubi and is currently the service's fifth most popular movie, a resurgence that comes ahead of the Prime Video reboot expected in 2027. Director Simon West’s big-budget adaptation translated the popular video game to the big screen with a $115 million production and went on to gross $274 million, making it the highest-grossing video game movie at the time.
Critics were harsh, giving it just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, while fans rated it 47% on the Popcornmeter; over time the film has taken on cult-classic status. Angelina Jolie’s portrayal of Lara Croft stood out, earning praise even from those who disliked the film.
Fresh off an Oscar and other high-profile roles, she trained intensively and embraced the movie’s heightened tone, delivering the confident, witty adventurer fans remembered from the games. Alicia Vikander led the 2018 reboot but a planned sequel was canceled.
