Late-night hosts responded this week to a string of alarming comments from Donald Trump and his outburst at a heckler in Michigan, focusing on his threats to invoke the Insurrection Act and chaotic scenes involving ICE officers in Minneapolis. On Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel said “all hell has broken loose” and mocked Trump’s suggestion he might invoke the Insurrection Act, joking that “he hasn’t been able to get an insurrection for years.” Kimmel also referenced a Reuters interview in which Trump commented about possibly skipping the next election; Kimmel replied, “We can’t have an election soon enough,” to applause, and noted that Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, has said he was joking.

Stephen Colbert on the Late Show described Minnesota as “under siege by masked armed goons victimising American citizens” and criticised the behaviour of ICE officers, citing a report that errors in the hiring of 10,000 new agents put many in place without proper training and that the maximum required training was eight weeks.

Colbert also mocked talk of Trump taking over Greenland and noted NATO involvement and Germany sending troops, saying Germany was sending 13 soldiers. Seth Meyers on Late Night highlighted Trump’s recent boos and heckling at a Ford plant, where a worker called him a “pedophile protector” and Trump responded with a middle finger and expletives.
