Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior said "I'm disappointed" after referee Paul Tierney found himself inside the Blues' team huddle just before kick-off. Rosenior criticised the officials' focus and said he would be speaking to the PGMOL to try and get an understanding of why that happened.

On the pitch, Anthony Gordon's early strike proved decisive as Newcastle won 1-0. Rosenior lamented a tactical lapse in Chelsea's high-risk pressing system and warned it leaves the side exposed, saying, "It feels like every mistake we're making is ending up in the back of the net." Chelsea were affected by late training setbacks and injuries: Filip Jorgensen felt his groin, Jamie felt his hamstring late in training, Estevao is out, and Pedro Neto was absent amid a ban hearing.
