Gary Lineker has picked Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes as his choice for PFA Player of the Year, putting the Portuguese playmaker ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice despite Rice being the odds-on favourite. Lineker highlighted Fernandes’ individual brilliance and tactical intelligence as reasons for his verdict.

Rice reinforced his value during Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Chelsea, providing the assist for Jurrien Timber’s winner and registering four goals and 11 assists across 39 appearances this season. Lineker, however, believes Fernandes’ reading of the game sets him apart.

"When Bruno Fernandes gets a grip of that game… You talk about spaces, and where he goes, he’s so clever," he said. Fernandes has seven goals and 14 assists in 27 appearances across all competitions, and Lineker acknowledged that awards often favour players who win titles.
