Lionel Messi's stance on Finalissima revealed after Argentina vs Spain clash called off
Argentina captain Lionel Messi was left disappointed after the 2026 Finalissima was cancelled. He had treated the match against Spain as a vital competitive fixture and a key building block ahead of the next World Cup, rather than a mere exhibition, and he was not involved in the boardroom discussions that led to its scrapping.
The game had been scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, set to pit the Copa America 2024 winners against the Euro 2024 champions. Organisers pulled the plug amid the escalating political situation in the Middle East, and UEFA said that, after talks with Qatari authorities, the Finalissima could not be played in Qatar and other options proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association.
CONMEBOL said a search for a neutral venue followed. Italy was proposed for March 27; Argentina accepted but asked to move the date to March 31, and UEFA said holding the match on the 31st was not possible, resulting in the match being cancelled. Messi did not take part in the negotiations and remained focused on the pitch.
