Tomorrow Studios is developing a live-action remake of Samurai Champloo. The company behind Netflix’s One Piece will involve the original creator, Shinichiro Watanabe, though his exact role has not been disclosed. The anime debuted in 2004 and blends a hip-hop aesthetic with Edo-period samurai as Fuu and her two hired bodyguards, Jin and Mugen, travel across Japan in search of the Samurai Who Smells of Sunflowers, encountering strange allies and foes along the way.

Music will be central to the new series. The original soundtrack—by Force of Nature, Fat Jon, Tsutchie and Nujabes—is widely celebrated, and Variety says the remake will "retain the core elements fans love while updating the material for a contemporary television audience." "Music will be central to the process," and "The studio plans to bring in a major recording artist early to help establish the show’s sound." Tomorrow Studios’ 2021 live-action Cowboy Bebop attempt famously "crashed and burned," failing to capture what made the original special.
