Liverpool open talks to take Lutsharel Geertruida on loan before deadline
Liverpool are making a final push to sign Lutsharel Geertruida before Monday's transfer deadline, opening talks to take the defender who is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, according to Fabrizio Romano. Geertruida previously played under Reds head coach Arne Slot at Feyenoord.
Slot has publicly sought defensive reinforcements with 48 hours to go after injuries to Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni, and the club decided against selling Andy Robertson to Tottenham earlier this week. After Saturday's 4-1 win against Newcastle, Slot said: "I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it.
But yeah, 48 hours to go. Let's see where the window ends up." Ben Jacobs has added that Liverpool would take over Geertruida's loan for the remainder of the season, with the Netherlands international able to play at right-back, centre-back and in midfield. He is currently on a straight loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig.
Geertruida came through Feyenoord's academy and became a key member of the side under Slot, helping them reach the 2021-22 Europa Conference League final and win the 2022-23 Eredivisie.
