Liza Minnelli says she caught husband Peter Allen in bed with a man
Liza Minnelli writes in her new memoir that her first marriage to Peter Allen broke down when she walked in and found him having “passionate sex” with a man. “This was a betrayal of our marital intimacy,” she wrote, adding that she couldn’t initially process what she had seen: “It was impossible for my heart to absorb what my eyes had seen.” After the other man quickly dressed and left, Minnelli says she stood frozen until Allen came over, held her tightly and they began to weep.
He then told her, “Liza, I love you more than anyone in the world and I’m gay,” and explained he had tried to be monogamous but felt attraction to men; “It was a fact of his life and now mine.” She wrote the infidelity “didn’t break” them and that neither wanted the marriage to end.
The couple, who met through Minnelli’s mother Judy Garland, became engaged in 1965 and married in 1967. During the engagement she had an affair with the French singer Charles Aznavour, saying she “loved him” even as she loved Allen.
