Louis Theroux’s 20 best documentaries
It has been almost 30 years since Louis Theroux began making documentaries for the BBC, moving from the gonzo-style Weird Weekends into a career that now includes nearly 100 BBC titles. He is now moving over to Netflix; Inside the Manosphere, the first programme he has presented for the streamer, dives into the men’s rights movement and modern masculinity and is due for release on 11 March.
The Guardian picks out 20 of Theroux’s finest films, showcasing the range of his work. His early approach often involved throwing himself into subcultures, while later pieces see him gain unusual access to institutions and individuals, revisit troubling subjects and handle painful topics with sensitivity.
