Luke Tennie on Shrinking Episode 7’s Loss and How It Changes Sean
Luke Tennie, who plays Sean on Apple TV’s Shrinking, described how the character’s journey has been shaped by the show’s ensemble. Over three seasons Sean has moved from a therapy client to a found family member, reconnecting with Marisol, running a food truck and pursuing bigger dreams as a chef, all with help from the other characters.
Tennie emphasized his place in that ensemble, calling himself a supporting actor and saying, “I am a supporting actor. That is what I do.” He compared his work to blocking for a quarterback, adding, “Maybe one day, I’ll be a quarterback, but for right now, I’m blocking, and I’m blocking well and hard.” He sees his roles on Shrinking, Abbott Elementary and The Pitt as opportunities to elevate the multi-hyphenate creators around him.
He also enjoyed the show’s big, family-style moments, including the episode seven scene where the cast sings around a piano. Tennie laughed about learning the chords in his trailer and, when asked if he knew the song, said, “Did I know that song? Have I seen Twilight?
