The lyrics to the rap about John McAfee, annotated
The Netflix documentary Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee follows McAfee in 2012–13 as he hides in Belize, flees to Guatemala and is deported back to the United States. Midway through the film, raw footage abruptly cuts to a 2018 rap video, The McAfee Effect by the Coin Bros, filmed at a lavish property where McAfee sits amid booze, gold bars, stacks of cash, a handgun and a large pile of white powder.
The annotated lyrics tie many of the song’s boasts to episodes from McAfee’s life. Lines about faking a heart attack recall an incident used to delay a deportation; references to privacy nod to the antivirus company that made his name; and boasts about women, guns and drugs echo his well‑documented excesses.
The song also namechecks McAfee’s crypto schemes, including his 2017 “coin of the week” pump‑and‑dump activity that led to a 2021 US indictment on fraud and money‑laundering charges; he died in a Spanish jail three months later.
