Macclesfield target another Premier League tie after shock Palace win
Goal reports Macclesfield boss John Rooney is hoping his non-league side can upset more Premier League opposition after they dumped FA Cup holders Crystal Palace out of the competition.
The National League North club beat Oliver Glasner's team 2-1, a victory that came despite being 117 places below Palace and has been described as the biggest upset in FA Cup history in terms of league places. Macclesfield mustered 13 shots to Palace's 12, with both sides registering four efforts on target. Rooney, 35 and five years younger than Wayne Rooney, only began coaching last summer after succeeding Robbie Savage in the dugout. Palace boss Glasner told BBC: "We give congratulations to Macclesfield for winning. We had no kind of quality today... We deserved to lose. Honestly, I have no explanation for what I have seen today."
Macclesfield are the only non-league team left in this season's FA Cup and will learn their fourth-round opponent when the draw gets underway at around 6.35pm (GMT) on Monday; the tie should take place in mid-February. Rooney told BBC he was still pinching himself after the win and said: "Fingers crossed we get a good draw tonight and get another Premier League side." He added the club face Woking in the FA Trophy on Tuesday and that "we have a really busy schedule coming up. We are Saturday-Tuesday from now until the end of the season."
