Macron urges Europe to wake up amid ‘profound geopolitical rupture’
Emmanuel Macron urged Europe to reassert its position as the global order shifts, warning the continent faces rapidly changing politics and trade. In an interview with a group of European outlets, he said: “It is time for Europe to wake up … If we do not decide for ourselves, we will be swept away.” He said Europe confronts “a profound geopolitical rupture” and “a profound shock” on trade and defence as ties with China and the US evolve.
Macron called for reducing risk and dependencies and for quicker, more united decision‑making: “If we choose to be spectators, we will be vassals,” he said, describing the US interest in Greenland as a wake‑up call for European leaders. Macron argued Europeans “stand firm, but react too slowly,” and urged more common leadership, pointing to the Franco‑British Coalition of the Willing for Ukraine as an example of building strong international alliances.
