Time reports that Nicolás Maduro, deposed and captured by American forces, is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn after being transported from Caracas; just days earlier he was serving as the President of Venezuela. Maduro, seized in a U.S.-led raid on Saturday, is being held on federal charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine-importation conspiracy; his wife, Cilia Flores, along with his son and other Venezuelan officials, have also been charged.

The couple were booked into the M.D.C. late Saturday after being transported by helicopter, warship, and plane, pleaded not guilty on Monday in New York court, and will await their next court appearance, set for March 17, in the jail, which serves as a way station for detainees before trial or sentencing.

The M.D.C., in Sunset Park, houses roughly 1,300 inmates in an industrial area near the waterfront and has a troubled record of deaths, alleged abuse and neglect. The facility has been described as "barbaric" and "hell on earth" by judges and lawyers, and has held other high-profile detainees such as R.
