Maggie Gyllenhaal says Warner Bros. asked her to cut violence in The Bride
Maggie Gyllenhaal says Warner Bros. asked her to remove some of the more violent moments from The Bride!, which stars Jessie Buckley as the Bride and Christian Bale as Frank. The film is set for release on Mar. 6, 2026. Gyllenhaal told The Hollywood Reporter the final cut is "a little bit pulled back from what was originally in the movie" after studio executives raised concerns.
She defended the remaining violence by saying "one of the things that was important to me is that everybody who is killed, is hurt — we, at least for a moment, get to know them," and recounted a specific note from Pam Abdy: "Maggie, you cannot have Frankenstein lick black vomit off The Bride!'s neck.
It’s just too much. You can’t do it." The director described extensive test screenings, including big mall screenings, where viewers questioned whether the film was too violent. Some audience members, she said, specifically women, told her they did not want to see a woman violated, and she wondered if a male filmmaker would have faced a different reaction.
