Major US trade groups press for en masse tariff refunds
Major US trade groups are pressing the Trump administration to speed payment of tariff refunds to small businesses, calling the repayments "existential" for startups and other small firms. The Consumer Technology Association and the US Chamber of Commerce filed a brief in V.O.S.
Selections, Inc. v. Trump asking the court to move quickly. The filing asks the court to establish "an efficient, orderly process to deliver refunds en masse." Neil Bradley, the Chamber's executive vice president, said the groups worry other parties might try to benefit, adding, "the last thing our system needs is for the trial bar to be profiting off refunds owed to small businesses." The groups' action follows a 6-3 Supreme Court decision that concluded the tariffs were illegal and that the administration's invocation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was invalid.
Judge Richard K. Eaton of the US Court of International Trade ruled that businesses subjected to the tariffs are "entitled to the benefit" of the Supreme Court ruling.
