When New York’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, moved into Gracie Mansion with his wife, Rama Duwaji, he said he had an "aspirational hope" to install bidets in the official residence and added, "We’ll see if we can actually get it done." A mayoral spokesperson confirmed by email that installation had already begun.

In an interview with ABC 7 New York Mr. Mamdani said he was envisioning a handheld $25 water gun "that you hook on the side of the toilet." The announcement drew mixed reaction on social media, with many users enthusiastic and others questioning the focus on toilets rather than policy; Caroline Rose, the daughter of former mayor Rudolph W.

Giuliani, wrote that she "would’ve done it myself if I had known about bidets when I lived there!!" Reporting noted a broader shift in U.S. attitudes toward bidets. A 2026 survey of 700 industry experts by the National Kitchen and Bath Association found 76 percent of interior designers said homeowners were seeking toilets with more features, and 48 percent predicted bidet seats would be popular within three years.

Justin Allen, chief executive of Brooklyn-based bidet maker Tushy, said the company has shipped over two million units since 2015 and argued bidets can reduce toilet paper and wet-wipe use. The coverage described several bidet styles — separate basins common in Europe, modern attached seats with retractable spray wands, and hand-held "bum guns" familiar in parts of Asia — and noted price and installation differences.
