People reports that at Swansea Crown Court on Monday, Jan. 12, Rhydian Lynne Rhys Jamieson, 28, was sentenced to 35 years in prison after being found guilty of causing his infant daughter’s “catastrophic injuries” by throwing her against a television last January.

The BBC reported the attack left the girl with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and extensive cuts and bruising, and that she will require lifelong medical care. Jamieson had pleaded guilty last April, the Liverpool Echo said, and the BBC reported he sent apologetic texts after the incident, including “I’m sorry for what I’ve done” and “I think I’ve killed someone.” The child’s mother, who was not publicly identified, told the court, “You’re nothing but a spiteful, disgusting person,” according to the BBC. Prosecutors told the court Jamieson had “snapped” before the attack; the BBC also reported the judge called him a “coward” for refusing to attend his sentencing and said, “You threw the baby with great force at the television… It was a fit of uncontrolled temper.”

Wales Online reported Jamieson must serve two-thirds of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Dyfed‑Powys Police detective chief inspector Gary Williams told reporters, according to the outlet, that investigators “still do not know what made him act in this way — what made him ‘snap’,” and that any explanation would not excuse the conduct.
