Reporting by Theguardian says a man was shot dead by police after reportedly breaking into a home in Tuncurry on the New South Wales mid-north coast armed with a chainsaw and a knife and stabbing a woman. NSW police said officers from the Manning Great Lakes police district were called to the property just before 6.40am on Friday after reports of a home invasion, and were told the man had left in a white 4WD.

Officers found a 28-year-old woman with serious wounds at the house; she was treated by paramedics and flown to the John Hunter hospital in a serious but stable condition. Officers pursued the 4WD, which reportedly crashed on the Forster Bridge after driving through a sports ground.

Police said the man then carjacked another vehicle and rammed a police car, causing minor injuries to one officer, before driving onto a property and entering a house while still armed. Police said a Taser was deployed multiple times and the man ran towards an officer, who then shot him; officers treated the man but he died at the scene.
