Manchester United lost for the first time under Michael Carrick, going down 2-1 to 10-man Newcastle. Casemiro nodded United level after Anthony Gordon converted a penalty won when Bruno Fernandes committed the foul, but Will Osula’s superb strike in the final minute handed the Magpies the victory despite United having a numerical advantage for the entire second half.

Newcastle started brightly — Kieran Trippier clipped the post before Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes went close — but United grew into the game as Kobbie Mainoo and Matheus Cunha forced Aaron Ramsdale into saves and Bryan Mbeumo blazed over from close range. The contest turned on Jacob Ramsey’s dismissal late in the first half after he collected two bookings, the second given for simulation inside the penalty area.

United dominated possession after the break but could not find a way past Ramsdale, who denied Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, and Osula’s late curling finish proved decisive.
