O’Reilly fired Manchester City into the lead in the 14th minute, fizzing a low drive from the edge of the box into the bottom-left after Omar Marmoush slipped the ball to him. Haaland was steaming in on the overlap, but O’Reilly took the shot himself and beat Nick Pope.

City had pressed from the start, Aït-Nouri whipping in an early cross and forcing a corner. Marmoush and Semenyo created further chances; Pope parried one effort and Semenyo’s rebound was sliced harmlessly wide. Newcastle threatened on the break too, with Gordon racing inside-left before Donnarumma blocked his shot, and Willock going down after a nudge from Nunes that went unpunished.

Tensions flared when Dan Burn hauled down Haaland on the right and was booked after protesting at length. Newcastle found themselves largely on the back foot as City won several corners and dominated territory. Manchester City made one change from their previous league XI, Marmoush replacing Phil Foden; Newcastle brought Jacob Ramsey in for Harvey Barnes.
