Pep Guardiola sank back into his dugout seat after a moment of sheer brilliance from Dominic Szoboszlai: a 30-yard free-kick that curled in off the post and looked, for a time, like a matchwinner. The goal briefly left Liverpool celebrating and City fearing the worst, but a chaotic finish was still to come.

City, needing a win to cut the gap to the leaders to nine points, had controlled the first half but struggled after the break. Bernardo Silva fashioned a lifeline in the 84th minute, reacting to an Erling Haaland header to stab home the equaliser. Shortly after seven minutes of stoppage were signalled, Matheus Nunes was fouled by Alisson as he reached a through ball and Haaland calmly converted the resulting penalty to send the away end wild.

There was more late drama: Alexis Mac Allister forced a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma and, with Alisson up for the corner, City survived a scramble. Rayan Cherki then rolled a low shot from the halfway line toward an unguarded Liverpool goal, and in the recovery Szoboszlai fouled Haaland.
