Manchester United draw up interim shortlist with Michael Carrick tipped to stand in
Goal reports Manchester United have drawn up a shortlist of interim managers as they seek a temporary replacement after sacking Ruben Amorim, with Michael Carrick tipped by The i Paper as an early frontrunner to take charge until a permanent appointment is made. The club dismissed Amorim after 14 months following a public breakdown in relations after the draw with Leeds, when he demanded to be viewed as a "manager" rather than just a "coach".
United's new hierarchy, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, cited a lack of progress and Amorim’s refusal to adapt his tactical system despite a £250 million summer spend; his tenure also included a Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town and the club's lowest Premier League finish last season. The club said on its official website: "With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.
This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future." Darren Fletcher will take charge at least for the forthcoming clash with Burnley while the search for a permanent manager continues, and United could appoint another interim as they did when Ralf Rangnick was hired in 2021.
