British police arrested Peter Mandelson at his London home on Monday after allegations that he passed confidential government information to Jeffrey Epstein. He had been appointed Britain’s ambassador to the United States last year and was later dismissed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer when details of his friendship with Epstein emerged.

The arrest has intensified a scandal that has shaken the governing Labour Party and prompted demands that the prime minister explain what he knew and when. Mr. Starmer removed Mr. Mandelson’s "right honorable" title and pressed him to resign from the House of Lords, and lawmakers are pushing the government to release thousands of pages of internal documents, the first of which are due in early March.

Mr. Mandelson has not been charged. He has said he regrets his association with Epstein and that the documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice did not indicate wrongdoing on his part. He was questioned by police on Monday and released on bail that evening.
