PlayStation's new live-service shooter Marathon launched today. Bungie developed the $40 sci‑fi extraction game, and in the author's first hour after servers went live there were no queues or disconnects; the main menu now includes a store. The store lists about a dozen weapon camos, runner skins and bundle packs.

Purchases use Lux, Marathon's premium currency: 100 Lux equals one US dollar and the smallest bundle of Lux costs 500 Lux for $5. Cosmetic bundles include a runner skin, a weapon skin, a small trinket, and a player profile image and banner, and cost 1500 Lux — $15.

Runner skins are also available separately for around $12; while those prices are similar to Destiny 2, Fortnite and Rainbow Six Siege, those games are free-to-play and Marathon is $40. Reaction has been mixed: some Reddit users welcome paid cosmetics instead of paid expansions, while others object to $15 packs and $10+ skins appearing on day one in a $40 game.
