Marathon fans racing to kill 500 million robots to unlock Cryo Archive

Marathon's upcoming Cryo Archive map is confirmed but its release date remains unclear. The end-game “pinnacle” activity is meant to be tougher than anything players have faced on Tau Ceti IV, and the new location is locked behind an ARG that includes a community task to kill a cumulative 500 million UESC security forces across all runs.

A website tracking progress shows the kill count at 315,093,135, leaving just under 185 million to go. That total has been accumulated since the game's March 5 launch, which suggests the community may need several more days to hit the goal and that the update could miss the weekend fans expected; at the current rate, a conservative estimate puts the trigger another week away.

The event may have been calibrated for a larger player base at launch, or Bungie could add twists — UESC forces might ramp up across maps or new contracts could incentivize more kills.
