Marathon Is Already Improving On Arc Raiders In One Key Area
Marathon has been playing catch-up to Arc Raiders since both games debuted their first player tests, but Bungie’s extraction shooter is taking a firmer stance on cheating. The developer announced a strict one-strike ban policy: "Anyone found to be cheating will be permabanned from playing Marathon forever, no second chances," it wrote in a blog post previewing the multiplayer shooter’s upcoming server slam on February 26.
The post outlines systems intended to limit exploits and protect matches. Bungie describes a "new server authority model" that automatically rejects "invalid client actions" before they can affect other players, which "protects the gameplay experience against exploits such as teleporting, unlimited ammo, or damage manipulation." A "fog of war" will restrict map information to prevent "wall hacks" or "ESP cheats," and the team also mentions "client-side security upgrades," a telemetry "backend analysis system," plus measures to return loot if a game crashes or disconnects.
