Marathon Is Already Trailing Arc Raiders, Analyst Says
Marathon’s open beta performed strongly during Steam’s Next Fest, finishing as the most-played demo and the event’s second-most wishlisted title after attracting over 200,000 wishlist adds during the festival. The game now sits at roughly 1.2 million total wishlists on Steam.
Alinea Insight estimates Marathon had sold just under 250,000 Steam copies as of March 2, three days before launch. By that same point, Arc Raiders had sold about 550,000 copies—more than double Marathon’s tally—raising questions about how the two extraction shooters will compete at launch.
Player overlap data shows 48 percent of Marathon beta players also checked out Arc Raiders, while 74 percent had played Destiny 2. Marathon launches March 5 on PC, Xbox and PS5. Capcom says Resident Evil Requiem has shipped more than 5 million units, though it remains well behind the long-running top seller in the franchise, the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, which has reached nearly 17 million copies.
