Marathon might just break a long-standing Sony curse through genuine fun
Marathon has become one of the most divisive games in a while. Discussions online are full of players calling it terrible and dead on arrival, while those enjoying Bungie's extraction-shooter experiment are often drowned out. I think Marathon is great: I've had a brilliant time with the Server Slam, played entirely solo, and I appreciate the tense atmosphere it provides.
It feels very different from Arc Raiders. Where Arc Raiders can be a walk in the park once you learn its systems, Marathon is not designed for pacifist runs. It has more in common with Escape From Tarkov — a very quick time-to-kill, shields that offer only minor aid, and a pace that rewards careful listening, map awareness and cautious movement.
Players coming from faster games are having a tough time adapting. Fans of Destiny 2 should recognise the shooting here: smooth, crisp and satisfying, especially with a sniper rifle, even if Marathon is slower-paced. Combat still allows bursts of speed as you dip and dive out of cover.
