According to Goal, out-of-favour Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is reportedly set for a loan move to Girona.

In August 2024 he was announced as Barcelona's new captain, and a month later he suffered a serious knee injury that ruled him out for most of the 2024-25 season. Hansi Flick has made Joan Garcia his starter — "Joan is number one," Flick stated — and Ter Stegen has played just once this season, a 2-0 Copa del Rey win over Guadalajara. He was stripped of the captaincy earlier this season and is said to have rejected interest from West Ham.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, the 33-year-old will head to Girona for the second half of the season; it appears this would be a loan rather than a permanent switch.

If the transfer progresses quickly, the report says Ter Stegen could make his Girona debut next Monday against Getafe; otherwise he might start against Oviedo on 31 January or even face his parent club on 15 January. With the World Cup approaching, Germany sporting director Rudi Voller urged Ter Stegen to play regularly: "Ter Stegen has to play. Especially after his injury, and given his injury history, he needs to get match fitness to regain his form. Regardless of his quality."
