Marmoush double seals Manchester City comeback at Newcastle
Pep Guardiola had Omar Marmoush in the tightest of bear hugs after the 73rd minute, reluctant to let go. Two goals from the newly withdrawn Marmoush, the second described as a real show stopper, and another from Savinho turned the game around and secured Manchester City a passage into the FA Cup sixth round that continues their advance on a quadruple.
For Eddie Howe, the result leaves his campaign hinging on preparing for Barcelona in the Champions League. Newcastle had started strongly, their high intensity unsettling City’s defence, and Harvey Barnes gave them the lead after connecting with Sandro Tonali’s sublime pass and cutting inside to curl a shot beyond James Trafford; he had been played onside by Abdukodir Khusanov.
City responded as Doku’s ball in behind the defence bounced off Savinho’s shin and confounded Aaron Ramsdale to level the score, and Tijjani Reijnders had earlier missed several presentable chances for the visitors.
