The Marshals premiere, 'Piya Wiconi,' reveals that Monica Dutton died after a sudden battle with cancer. The episode picks up 15 months after Yellowstone's series finale, 'Life Is a Promise.' Kayce, Monica and their son Tate had been living on Yellowstone East Camp after losing their second son and as part of a land deal with the Broken Rock Indian Reservation.

The show says Monica contracted a form of cancer that was seemingly caused by toxins dumped into the reservation's water and soil, and the proposed mine nearby that would add more contamination becomes a focal point for protest. Monica's illness and death happen off-screen and appear to be a rapid decline.

Tate holds a photograph of his mother during the protest, and the episode ends with Kayce at her gravestone, removing any doubt about her fate.
