Marty Supreme overtakes Civil War as A24's No.2 U.S. grosser
Collider reports that Marty Supreme has overtaken Alex Garland's Civil War to become the second-highest-grossing A24 movie in U.S. box office history.
Last weekend the film earned $7.6 million domestically and finished sixth, bringing its global gross to $78 million, with almost all of that coming from U.S. receipts as markets such as Australia await release. The film was playing in fewer theaters than each of the top eight over the weekend yet still placed sixth; two new releases—Johannes Roberts' Primate and Greenland 2: Migration—outperformed it, while Avatar: Fire and Ash topped the charts.
Marty Supreme holds a "certified fresh" 93% from critics and 82% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes; the critics' consensus reads, "Serving up Timothée Chalamet at his most infectiously charismatic, Marty Supreme is a propulsive epic that realizes its sky-high aspirations even while it critiques its indelible hero's toxic ambition." A review by Ross Bonaime awarded the film 8/10, calling it "one of the most exciting and engaging films you'll see all year."
The film needs $7 million to claim the top spot on A24's U.S. list, and several international openings—including Australia—are still pending. Marty Supreme is in theaters now.
