In 2007, amid a busy year for film and pop culture, Marvel released a five-part mini-series that paired Ash Williams with the undead versions of Marvel’s heroes. Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness sent Sam Raimi’s chainsaw-wielding antihero into an alternate reality where Earth’s mightiest have become zombies, a crossover published by Marvel in association with Dynamite Entertainment.

The book arrived at a different moment for both franchises. It followed the 2006 Army of Darkness comic and served as a prequel to the Marvel Zombies run from 2005–2006, arriving 12 years after the Army of Darkness film and before later shifts in ownership and media focus that would change how such crossovers are made.

Rights have grown more complex since then. At the time, Dynamite could pair Ash with Marvel characters; later, Disney acquired Marvel, and other parties control various Evil Dead and Army of Darkness rights.
