Nine years after its 2017 release, Alexander Payne’s Downsizing has found a second life on streaming and is now available on Paramount+. The satirical sci‑fi imagines scientists who shrink humans to five inches to cut environmental impact and promise a life of relative luxury.

Matt Damon plays Paul Safranek, an ordinary man who volunteers for the procedure hoping for a better life — only to discover that smaller doesn’t necessarily mean simpler. The cast also includes Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz and Hong Chau; Chau’s performance earned widespread praise and award nominations.

Critical response was mixed. The film holds a 47% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes; some reviewers praised its inventive concept and moments of sharp social commentary, while many felt the movie never quite landed its thematic punches or settled on a cohesive tone.
