Mattel to Develop Live-Action Film Based on Tony the Tattooed Man
Mattel announced plans to develop a live-action film based on Tony the Tattooed Man, a toy the company released in 1992 that was withdrawn after parental complaints. Deadline reported that Mattel has teamed with director Tracie Laymon to develop the project.
The original toy allowed children to cover a nearly nude figure in tattoos, with transfers that could also be applied to kids, and was pulled from shelves; surviving figures are described as rare and collectible.
Mattel Studios’ President Robbie Brenner and Laymon issued statements framing the story as one about looking beyond first impressions, empathy and second chances; Laymon said the film could help “restore our faith in humanity.”
Kotaku27s coverage noted skepticism about the idea, calling it a “wild” proposal and questioning whether it could match the cultural and box-office impact of recent franchise successes such as Barbie.
