The western/horror mashup Bone Tomahawk arrived in 2015 starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins and Matthew Fox. The film earned glowing reviews but underperformed at the box office and has since built a cult following; it also marked the moment Fox decided to step away from acting.

Drawing inspiration from John Ford's The Searchers and the horror/western Ravenous, S. Craig Zahler's film follows frontiersmen searching for people kidnapped by cannibalistic cave dwellers. What begins as a traditional western shifts into action, adventure and survival before landing in horror territory, culminating in one of the genre's most gruesome scenes — hint: a man is pulled apart like a chicken bone.
