Matthew Lillard details Mr. Charles in Daredevil: Born Again season 2

The battle between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk may continue in Daredevil: Born Again season 2, but Vincent D’Onofrio’s former Kingpin will also face a new adversary: Matthew Lillard’s Mr. Charles.

Lillard says he landed the role after playing Dungeons & Dragons with three of the showrunners — Dario Scardapane, Matt Nix and Elwood Reid — and acting as their dungeon master alongside actor Abraham Benrubi. He described the casting as a bit of a deal with the devil and joked it came down to “how well you roll in certain games.”

On screen, Mr. Charles sounds like a shadowy figure. “Dario brought me in to play Mr. Charles, who’s like a CIA spook. He’s a guy who controls power from afar. He helps nations rise and fall, but he’s very clandestine,” Lillard said.

About his relationship with Fisk, Lillard was clear: “He is not impressed by the powers of D’Onofrio’s character at all. He and I get into this really delicious struggle over power. It’s good. It’s fun.”
