Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis said that since December thousands of federal agents have arrived in his city under an effort the Department of Homeland Security calls “Operation Metro Surge,” and that the federal action has devastated parts of Minneapolis and provoked widespread protests.

The interview says the deployment followed the killings of two American citizens in interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, and that protests against ICE have spread nationwide as congressional Democrats push for reform. The Justice Department is investigating Mr.

Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for an alleged conspiracy to impede federal agents, the article reports. Mr. Frey described a recent phone call with President Trump arranged by the president’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles, as collegial but said he demanded the operation end. The article says Tom Homan was dispatched to replace Gregory Bovino and promised to de-escalate; Mr.

Frey said he will “believe it when I see it,” and noted that Mr. Trump later posted that Mr. Frey was “playing with fire.” Frey said Minneapolis will not take on federal immigration enforcement and argued local police should focus on city crimes.
