Kylian Mbappé rolled home a 100th-minute penalty to secure Real Madrid a 2-1 win over nine-man Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, after Jude Bellingham limped off early with an apparent hamstring injury. Vinícius Júnior had put Madrid ahead in the 15th minute, and Jorge de Frutos levelled early in the second half.

The match tipped back in Madrid’s favour late on when Pathé Ciss was sent off and Mbappé converted the spot kick after Nobel Mendy fouled Brahim Díaz; Rayo also had Pep Chavarría sent off before the final whistle. Bellingham pulled up holding the back of his thigh after about 10 minutes and left the field in visible pain.

The club later confirmed the midfielder is likely to be out for up to a month. The Bernabéu crowd had been in an unforgiving mood after Real’s defeat at Benfica, despite interim coach Álvaro Arbeloa and Mbappé asking fans to show support. Madrid were whistled at half-time, and Ilias Akhomach’s early effort for Rayo narrowly missed a more sour outcome for the hosts.

Madrid had some good moments amid the tension: Thibaut Courtois made a superb save to deny Andrei Ratiu after the visitors had a chance to take the lead, Eduardo Camavinga hit a post and nine minutes of stoppage time were added before the decisive penalty. Known: Real beat Rayo 2-1 and the club says Bellingham is likely to be sidelined for up to a month.
