On the fashion colour wheel green has long been seen as tricky, flattering only some skin tones and prone to clashing. This year a particular apple green has been appearing on catwalks and the red carpet: Pamela Anderson arrived at the Berlin film festival in an apple-green wrap by Carolina Herrera over a dress in tonal pinks and greens, Amal Clooney chose a green Versace gown for a Golden Globes afterparty, and Rose Byrne wore green Chanel at the ceremony.

There is speculation the shade could make a strong showing at the Baftas this Sunday. Fashion writer Natalie Hammond suggests it might be “the new tomato” — a bold hue that works well as an accent, whether as a scarf or a jumper knotted at the waist. “I saw both of those coming out of New York fashion week,” she says, and argues that green can cut through the usual palette of black, white, red and metallics on the red carpet.
